Born September 13, 1966 to Jack and Betty Barron, Robert was exposed to aviation very early on in his life as his father used to belong to the Vancouver soaring association, back when they used to fly out of Vancouver international!! When the club moved to its current location in Hope, Robert spent just about every weekend on its beautiful grass runway with his eyes turned upward.  Growing up, in Chilliwack, He used to build and fly remote control airplanes, but even the thrill of that was not enough to satisfy his need for flight. In the early 1991 Robert was on his way to Victoria, when he just happened by the King George Airpark and saw the “Fam Flight” sign. He recalls that the price seemed very reasonable for a half hour of fun. So the next week he found himself in the Airflow office, he paid his money, and he was ready for his first ultralight airplane ride.  It was April 19, his instructor was Greg Powel, the airplane, a Beaver RX 550 with registration C-IDMT. After a quick pre-flight and briefing Greg started up the engine taxied to the runway and a few seconds later they were in the air. Robert remembers saying “boy these ultralights fly really good” After that there was no stopping him. Upon landing he wrote a cheque for 1000.00 dollars and started taking lessons. Robert’s first solo flight was on May 3, 1991 after only six hours of dual instruction.The rest they say is history. 

Recently Robert completed the passenger carrying course allowing him to carry unlisened passengers and as a proud Pappa, his first passenger was his son Craig, hopefully the next Barron in line to become a pilot.

 

Since he has soloed, Robert has accumulated over 300 hours in various ultralights, Beavers, Lazair’s, Super Koala. He now is the proud owner of a homebuilt Pober Pixie (Pictured) that is recognizable anywhere. His home field is the Intergalactic aerodrome at the corner of 176 street and 8th ave.  The field was established by his uncle Fred Baron, and you easily recognize his Murphy Renegade by its Red Baron paint job.  If you see Rob at King George airpark make sure to say hi, he loves to talk about his plane and flying in general.
